Matthew Perceval was born in Melbourne in 1945 into a family of artists, his father being prominent landscape painter John Perceval and his mother was from the Boyd family and would marry Sidney Nolan after separating from John. Perceval painted from a young age and set up a studio in London before moving in 1967 to paint in the South of France before moving to Paris in 1978. His first exhibition was held at the Karoly Foundation in Venice in 1968. At this time he was mainly painting landscapes of French Rural Life, although portraits did feature. Whilst in France he travelled through Europe and to North Africa on painting trips, learning pottery and glazing. In 1981 Perceval returned to Australia settling with his family in Newcastle. He continued to paint outside en plein air and traveled on painting trips through Australia until 2000 when, after his children left home, he decided to move back to Paris with his wife. After 2007 he has shared his time between his studio in Paris, and his studio in Newcastle. He has held over 30 solo exhibitions and also has contributed to many group exhibitions. His portrait works were exhibited at the National portrait Gallery, Canberra in 2007. His work is represented in numerous public, corporate and private collections in Australia and abroad.
