Ross Harvey was born in 1949 in Sydney. He studied Science and then Classics at Sydney University. From 1971-74 he studied at the Julian Ashton Art School, where he also taught from 1973-75. Following this he taught Painting and Drawing at the Meadowbank College of Technical and Further Education for over ten years. In 1991 he was an Art Consultant in ‘The Truth out There’, TV series on Channel 7. He taught again at the Julian Ashton from 1997 to 2006. Ross Harvey has studied the old masters and their techniques to achieve technical proficiency in his traditional realist still life paintings. He paints directly from the subject set up in front of him, never from photographs. By painting still-life, Harvey can combine balanced composition, tonal subtlety, light, form and depth, elements he believes to be important in picture making. It is usual for him to spend up to eight months per picture, and he would rather produce one masterpiece than a hundred mediocre paintings. He has held ten solo exhibitions since 1980, and has won many prizes including the Mortimore Prize four times. His work can be found in  AMP, Australia, Anglican Church, Corrs Chambers Westgarth, GIO, Australia, Newington College, NRMA Australia, Rothmans Ltd. He is also represented in private collections in the UK, USA, Australia, France, Germany and China
