Vincent Brown was born in Brisbane in 1901. He Died in 2001.
Born in Brisbane in 1901, Brown studied at the University of London and Slade School under Rudolph Schwabe. At the outbreak of war he engaged in many West End productions, and following a move to Oxford, he studied at the Ruskin School of Drawing under Albert Rutherston. In 1940 Brown moved back to Australia where married Dorothy Willetts and held many exhibitions before returning to England in 1948. He worked in art and theatre in both Wales and England and at the age of 65 he retired. He came back to Australia with his family in 1978 and found a large number of his early paintings in the family house. These were exhibited in Brisbane in 1979 and at a major retrospective exhibition in Sydney in 1980 and in Melbourne in 1981. A book on the artist’s life and work was published in 1980. A further retrospective was held at the Queensland Art Gallery in 1990. Vincent Brown died in 2001.
